Trading organics from oppressive regimesBoycotts? YES! Organic Boycotts? MAYBE NOT...We wholeheartedly support the principle of exercising consumer power against multinationals, and have long-standing boycotts in place of Nestle (including their organic coffee), Shell, & Esso, but our policy on boycotting organic produce from particular countries is not quite so straightforward. In the 1990s when the French were carrying out nuclear tests in the Pacific, some customers asked if we would boycott French produce. We had recently started buying produce from a small co-operative of French farmers, who told us that little would be gained by boycotting their produce as they were among the most active anti-nuclear campaigners in France. Consequently we continued to trade with them and support their efforts to persuade their government to stop the tests. IsraelOver the years, some customers have asked us to boycott Israeli produce, and for a considerable time we have bought avocados and sweet potatoes from non-Israeli sources, or gone without In the past, the ability of the Israeli organic growers to lobby their government has been unclear, because many of the farms and the distribution systems are under the control of the government, and it is difficult to make direct contact with the growers However as of February 2009, we have begun buying sweet potatoes from a family-run organic farm in Israel, distributed by a relative in Holland. The family actively campaigns against Israeli government action in Gaza, as far as it safe to do so We currently have no plans to buy other produce from Israel, and regardless of the Palestinian situation, we always source items as close to home as possible to reduce food miles Update 26-2-09Over the last 3 weeks we have sought further clarification regarding the previous owners of the land now run as the sweet-potato farm, and so far we don't feel that we have received adequate information. Consequently we have decided NOT to buy any further produce from them for the time being - watch this space.... Generally speaking...Whilst we are firm supporters of boycotts in general, our feeling remains that boycotting a particular source of organic produce is likely to hit the peace campaigners first, and so be counter-productive Our conclusion is therefore that we will continue to buy organic produce from countries with oppressive regimes or war-mongering governments (including our own!) as long as there is evidence that the growers campaign against that regime However we do try to be responsive to events as they develop, and review our policies to keep them effective and relevant, and to that end we are always keen to hear your views |
