Summer Spuds!
However don't get too excited at the prospect of Pink Fir Apple (pictured left) as although we've just lifted a small quantity out of curiosity, they're really a maincrop variety, and we wouldn't normally lift them until October JUNE: The 2007 crop of UK potatoes and carrots has now come to an end, so we are currently bringing in French new potatoes until the 2008 UK season kicks off, possibly by the end of June. However the early UK crops are very expensive, so savour them in small mouthfuls! Meanwhile there's plenty of UK lettuces becoming available, with spring greens, broad beans and bunched onions following on What's local or home-grown in June?

Many of the plants in the herb garden are now doing their best to flower and set seed - the coriander especially is a lost cause at this time of year, as we barely get a single picking before the plants stop producing leaves completely. By contrast, sowings made after the Solstice will crop until next spring! |
