Jan 08: What is the difference between Organic eggs and Free-Range? | Wildlife DiaryEvery spring in particular we have so many reminders of what a fantastic place Goosemoor is to live and work in, so from March 2008 we're going to record notable wildlife activity such as visits, breeding behaviour, flowering, and possibly even pet activity...
28 Jun: going into the barn in the evening, we spotted a tiny black and white fluffball scuttling under the horsebox The following morning whilst doing the horses feed, we had a feeling of not being alone, and realised that 2 pairs of little eyes were watching us through the engine grille of the horsebox! Over the following days, our pair of kittens ventured out to feed, drink and play. We discovered that their mum is an apparently homeless tabby who we have been inadvertently feeding for a couple of years, as she pinches food from our 2 grown up cats on a regular basis, but is terrified of humans. A ginger tom moved into the village a couple of months ago so perhaps he is dad? Jess has called the kittens Crumpet and Noodle (but Arnold refers to them disparagingly as Strumpet and Canoodle!) 31 May: we watched in amazement as a sparrowhawk swooped to grab a smaller bird from the wooden pergola just outside the window, then dropped to the ground to eat its prey. "Sad, but that's nature" said Arnold. Next thing, the sparrowhawk jumped backwards open-mouthed, and Woody Woodpecker scuttled up the willow tree, apparently none the worse for his near-death experience!
Every 5 minutes she flies out to restock with wood fibre from which she creates her spectacular paper brood chamber Unfortunately later in the day we had to close the window when the wind picked up, so we'll have to see if she carries on tomorrow 1 May: first cuckoo heard at Town End 22 Apr: swallows are back! 10 Apr: first cowslips out, and the first Small Tortoiseshell butterfly 9 Apr: saw the first bluebells in flower 2 Apr: 7pm Barn Owl hunting along hedge-line of Nature Reserve - beautiful white silent effortless flight 1 Apr: pair of Canada geese came down to graze with the horses, but Nohko got territorial and chased them off - later saw one of them on the ground in another paddock next to the pond; Arnold previously said he thinks they are nesting here; interestingly they do not react at all when bird-scarer goes off in the adjacent farmer's field (bird-scarers are typically used to frighten GEESE, but thank goodness they only seem to frighten HORSES...) 28 Mar: sad sight walking up lane to horses - dozen toads flattened on short stretch of road apparently crossing the lane to our pond; Arnold erected signs in both directions to warn drivers to slow down for TOADS; no dead toads seen since signs put up |
